Important information for our patients

Aultman Inpatient Medicine
Aiming for excellence in hospital medicine

The goal of Aultman Inpatient Medicine (AIM) is to provide you with exceptional care during your hospital stay. We understand you may feel uneasy not seeing your primary care physician upon admission to the hospital. Our team is committed to coordinating your care with your primary care physician during your hospital stay. Your designated AIM physician will visit you daily to discuss your care plan and answer any questions you may have. Our rounding coordinators will also help you with any specific needs at the time of discharge.

Patient Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my physician not see me in the hospital? Are they not allowed?

Many primary care physicians are choosing to partner with AIM to provide care to their hospitalized patients. This does not mean your physician is not “allowed” in the hospital. Currently, AIM partners with more 140 physicians in Canton and the surrounding communities.

Our physicians are in-house and available for you 24 hours a day in the hospital. Partnering with AIM allows your primary care provider to be more available for you in his or her office.

How does my physician know what happens to me while I am in the hospital?

AIM physicians and staff communicate with your physician when you are admitted, letting them know why you were admitted and what the initial plan of care is. They also send the discharge summary to your physician’s office the next business day after your discharge in order for your doctor to be aware of what happened in the hospital.

How do I know if AIM covers my primary care physician?

Please click here to view the current list of physicians covered by AIM.

What if I don’t have a primary care physician?

If you are to be admitted to the hospital without a primary care physician, you may be treated by AIM. Upon discharge from Aultman Hospital, our staff will discuss with you how to select a primary care physician for appropriate follow-up after discharge.

Are hospitalists the same as medical residents?

No, hospitalists are board certified or board eligible internal medicine physicians who have completed their residencies in their given specialties.

What information do I need to tell my hospitalist?

In order to provide you with exceptional care, the AIM staff should know the following:

  • Complete list of current medications
  • Allergies to medications
  • List of medical conditions
  • Specialist physicians
  • Ongoing treatments

When does the hospitalist see me?

Our hospitalists will visit you daily. You will also see your hospitalist if there has been a change in your condition. Our hospitals are more than happy to do conferences with your family members to update on your current status. Please discuss with your hospitalist your preferences.

Will I see the same hospitalist throughout my stay?

AIM has approximately 17 physicians who work together as a team to coordinate your plan. You may see more than one hospitalist, depending on the length of your stay and any changes in your condition. Our team is dedicated to working together and communicating patients’ statuses to the entire health care team, including your family members, physician specialists and nursing staff.

What should I ask my hospitalists during my stay?

We encourage our patients to ask our hospitalist team questions during daily rounding. Here are some examples:

  • What do you think is causing my problem?
  • What are the treatment options?
  • If my symptoms worsen, what should I do?
  • What medication side effects should I look for?
  • When should I follow up?

Who will I see after I leave the hospital?

You will be given instructions to follow-up with your primary care provider after being discharged from the hospital. If you do not have a primary care provider, our team can work with you to make a selection and follow-up appointment.
